Instead I used the following resources to teach them.
My kids like these ABC books very much. I tried to read to them as often as I could. When teaching letters, I also went around the house looking for objects starting with that letter, an activity which my kids enjoyed very much.
It is available from www.amazon.com. They made me read it hundreds of times to them !
I also had these puzzles to make learning ABCs fun for them.
My cousin bought this puzzle from London for us.
It is important to place more emphasis on lower case letters, because most of what we read are in lower case :
After the age of 2, I let my kids watch the Letter Factory DVD. It worked wonders. Both my kids know all the phonics letter sounds very well by watching this DVD.
I bought it from www.amazon.com. It is also available at the National Library. The Leapfrog DVDs are not sold in local stores.
You can read the 700+ customer reviews about the DVD here :
The Talking Words Factory DVD teaches how to join letters to form words, it is also very good :

Hi, I am interested in ordering the Leapfrog dvd from amazon.com too. but I found that the dvd is for region 1; here is singapore it's usually region 3. Is yours also region 1 or universal? thanks.
Yes it is stated as region 1 in the www.amazon.com website. However, most people I know have players that can play it without any problem.
If you are not sure if your player can play the DVD, you can try borrowing it from the library first.
Hi, can help me order the dvd? Your blog is really informative! Will try your methods mention for my kids. Thanks! sent you an email. :)
Hi
After the Leapfrog Series, I highly recommend the Rock & Learn Phonics DVD for more blends & others.

Dear Gina,
I am glad to know that you find my blog helpful.
The Rock and Learn phonics DVD is recommended by Rachelmum. I have not used it for my kids before.
hey jus saw how i can add u too my facebook, and did the same.... hope thats ik with you!!!
Hi Tamarind,
I find your blog very interesting but as i'm a full time working mother, i'm slowly going through your blog.
I would like to seek your advice. My son is currently 3 years old this year. As i do not have much time to teach him phonics at home though i would very much love to, i would like to seek your advice on which school to send him to have a headstart in phonics. I have heard about zoophonics and I can read.
Please email me at dafenni19@gmail.com if possible.
Many thanks in advance.
Cheers,
JT mum
Dear JT Mum,
I don't have any recent experience with phonics schools so I cannot comment.
hi Tamarind ,
MY daughter's school will be teaching them 'letterland' phonics.
Do you think that she will be confused if i show her the Leapforg dvd ?
I haven't used the Letterland phonics before, I am not sure how they teach phonics. If she is learning well in school then there is no need to get the Letter Factory DVD for her. You can try the free www.starfall.com website instead.
hi tamarind,
I have a vy active 18mth gal whom i can't get to sit down with me to do any reading. She only likes to flip thru the pages on her own & off she goes from my lap (-__-)''
Any advise?

At this age we should not expect kids to sit still and listen.
When my kids were that age, I bought these books for them :
Wonderful books for kids from birth to 3 years old
I allowed them to touch and flip the books as much as they wanted. There is an activity on every page for their little fingers to play with, so they were willing to listen to me read first before they played with the book.
We should let the kids play with the book so that they associate books with fun.
Most kids are not ready to learn to read at 18 months old. I would suggest that you teach the alphabet and phonics sounds first.
Hi tamarind,
Do u point the words to your children as you read to them, especially at a very young age where they are still learning how to talk.

Yes I tried to point as I read when my kids were very young. But that was not effective because they could not pay attention, I gave up because I was not very hardworking.
In fact, I only started to teach my kids phonics and reading when they were over 3 years old. I taught them phonics first, then when I used the Peter and Jane books, I point and ask my child to read out loud to me. This is a much more effective method to teach.
Hi,
i want the dvd also, can help me to order?
Hi teych,
Sorry I am not able to order for you. www.amazon.com offers direct shipping to Singapore address, you can order so long as you have a credit card.
Hi Tamarind,
Want to say thank you for all your sharing! I was feeling lost when I realised I have been depending and giving wrong expectation to the playgroup that my son has been attending. It was a wake up call for me to know that I have to teach him myself starting from ABC and abc. I followed your methods and materials for both chinese and phonics over the past 2 months, the achievement is really amazing and I feel very grateful to chance upon this blog.
Now my 3yr3mths old boy loves reading aloud to me and he enjoys so much when I read Dr. Seuss' books to him. The beginning was hard but he get used to all the "card games" and reading the Key words series 1a 1b with me now.
Thank you so much and look forward to more sharing from you! :)

JJ
JJ,
Can get lower case puzzle at ToyRus and ELM Tree both at suntec, I just got a few sets to teach spelling.
Hi Tamarind,
I love to read your blogs, lots of information. May I know what brand is the circle alphabet puzzle? I am from UK, so I am thinking to get one for my little girl.
Hi Cherlyn,
I have given away the circle puzzle and I vaguely remember that my cousin bought it in Marks and Spencer. Check out their website :
puzzles
Thanks for your reply. I always shop at mark and spencer, i guess they no longer sell the ABC set that you got. =)
opps, tamarind. ignore my reply please. I just saw it still in the website but not in the shop. Thanks. I have ordered one.
Hi tamarind
Love ur blog. Found it very useful. I let my 2 yr plus son watch the leapfrog disc and he's learning the sound. However, I have problem getting him to learn the abc. Need ur help and suggestion how do u teach ur children to recognise the 26 alphabets ? Hm
Hi,
Besides the Leapfrog DVDs, I also use books and puzzles. Check out this page :
Teaching A B C
I also printed some pictures eg aeroplane for letter A and get him to place it under the letter A when I read out the word aeroplane. But he seems to get restless. Is that how u teach ur kids abc ?
I suggest that you use real objects instead, like toy aeroplanes, toy cars, etc. Young kids naturally cannot sit still and pay attention, and we should not expect them to do so. Try to use games to teach. It can be very simple like hiding the letters and let the child find them, then read out the letter.
