How do I manage to find the time to teach ?

My boy, now 4 years 9 months old, is reading from book 11a, Mystery on the Island, from the Ladybird Key Words (Peter and Jane) series. He is reading very fluently, he can read a page shown in the photo in less than 5 minutes.

I have also started to let him read The Enormous Crocodile by Roald Dahl. He can now spell more than 100 commonly used words correctly, checkout this page : Spelling.

My 6 year old girl has read Charlotte's Web, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the Wonderful Wizard of Oz. She is now reading the Little House on the prairie.

It may seem like I have spent many hours a day teaching my kids to read. But the fact is that I am a full time working mommy. I return home at about 7:30pm everday. I can only afford to spend 15 minutes or less teaching each child (my girl and my boy).

Here's my advise :

1. Stay focus. Teach one most important skill : reading in English. Once the child can read fluently, he can read any book and the world is at his fingertips. From the age of 3 to 6, acquiring the ability to read very well should be top priority. In primary schools, the child needs to be able to read well in order to do maths and science. I only teach the kids maths once a week during the weekend, and I am very happy with their progress. For Chinese, I send them to Berries Chinese enrichment class since they were 4 years old.

2. Use the most effective methods
The best resources are :
a. Leapfrog DVDs : Letter Factory, Talking Words Factory, Code Word Caper. Children can easily understand the basics of phonics simply by watching these DVDs every day. Both my kids learn all the 26 letter sounds simply by watching the Letter Factory DVD, I don't need to do anything at all.

b. Effective use of words cards. Click here: How to teach phonics to read about my methods.
My boy thinks that he is playing games while he is learning phonics. By giving him the cards to "play", I make sure that he is paying attention and really applying what he has learnt before.

I only teach my boy to read one page from the Peter and Jane series everyday. After about one year, he is reading very well.

d. www.starfall.com : excellent and free website to learn phonics and reading. I just turn on the computer and let my kids play with the website on their own.

4. Learn consistently. 15 minutes a day, everyday for more than 1 year can work wonders on any child.

5. Start early. I think that 3 years old is a good age to start to learn to read books. Between 18 months and 3 years old, the child should focus on learning on the 26 letters and their phonics sounds.

6. Don't do housework during weekdays. I am fortunate to have a good maid, so I don't have to do any housework when I return home from work. For mommies with no maid, try to get your hubby to help out, if not then invest in automatic machines (floor vacuuming and washing robots, dishwashers, clothes dryer, etc). Otherwise leave all housework till weekend. Remember that your priority is spending quality time with your kids. It is important that your child reads consistently everyday.

Hi,

Thank you for sharing yr method and I had learnt alot from yr blog and website recommendations.

I am actually going thru the ''e'' with my son now but I am confused as it's pronounced as ''air'' but for words like ''be'' how should the ''e'' sound like?

Tamarind said...

Hi leeleng,
The word "be" does not follow phonics rules. So children must learn it as a "sight word". There are many words like this, for example "one", "two", etc.

English is not a completely phonetic language. Although learning phonics makes it easier to read by at least 50%, there are many words which cannot be read using phonics, and these words must be learnt by sight. Teaching phonics alone is not enough, you must also start on a good reader like the ladybird keywords series.

Please read the last section of this page :
How to teach phonics

I only played the Leapfrog Letter Factory DVD once a week. My daughter, who was 3 years old at the time, learnt all the letter sounds within one week. My son was 2 years old when we first bought the DVD, he knew all the letter sounds only when he was 3 years old. Whenever he saw any letters in his children's books, he is able to say the correct phonics sound.

Try this free website first
www.starfall.com

If your kids can learn all the letter sounds from starfall.com, then there is no need to get the DVD.

The Leapfrog Letter Factory DVD helps my boy a lot. Besides that, I also used puzzles and books. I will be creating a new page in blog to share some of the materials that I used :)

Hi,
I am really inspired by your blog and motivated.

I am a mother of 3 1/2 years son who is very hyper.

He is in NTUC Play group at Hougang now and going to Nursery next year. But I am not at all happy with the school; So, I am thinking of changing his school to any PCF or Church Kindergarten. But I believe, 2010 registration is over. So, I need to wait until next year.

Two things I would like to know -
In which PCF your kids are studying. Please do let me know.

Also, in Singapore, where can I get these leapfrog study resources and the puzzles. Please do advice.

You are a wonderful mom.
Your kids are blessed to have you.
Best
Ratna

Dear Ratna,
Thanks for your compliments :-)

My kids are attending the PCF kindergarten at 662B Jurong West ST 64.

You can find a PCF near your place here :

Click kindergarten, locations.

Not all PCF kindergarten are good, try to find out from the teacher about their detailed curriculum.

The Leapfrog DVDs are only available at www.amazon.com from the USA. If you are interested to buy, please email me at frostyapple@gmail.com. Please add my email to your address book to make sure that you receive my reply.

You can find many puzzles at bookshops like :

Hi,
Greetings,
Trust this email finds you in good spirits.
Thank you for the prompt reply. I really appreciate it.
Yes - I understand that all the PCF kindergartens are not the same.. and it depends on the teachers and syllabus.
Anyways, we are lucky enough that today only we got a call that there is a vacancy in Nativity Church Kindergarten School n Hougang which is proved to be one of the good kindergarten schools.
So, going to join him in that school.

While coming to leapfrog DVDs, sure - I shall send you an email once I plan to purchase the same in next few days.

Another thing, do you advice me to join him in Chinese enrichment classes now? He is 3 1/2 years now. His english is good ( I mean managable to speak with the local kids and his friends in the school :-)

Thanks in advance for all l the help.

Best
Ratna

Dear Ratna,
My kids attend Berries Chinese enrichment class. Click here to find their locations.
Berries

Berries is the best place for pre-school kids to learn Chinese. Their standard is very high, but their teaching methods are fun and enjoyable.

I have some information about Berries in my blog :
Learning Chinese
Chinese test
Reading Chinese Books

Kids should start attending Berries no later than 4 years old, otherwise they cannot follow up at 5 years old when other kids are already reading short stories.

My Almanac said...

Hi,
Thank you for the response.
Yes - I have enrolled him Berries for the N2 Chinese class for the coming academic year.

And I have joined him Nativity Church Kindergarten for Nursery school at Hougang Avenue 8.

BTW, can you provide me with the link / list of the books / puzzles and the places where I can get it for a 3 1/2 years nursery boy to teach him English and Math and other important things here in SG.

And leapfrog material.. what all I shold be buying initially.. please advice.
Thanks in advance for all the help.

Ratna

Hi there,

I'm so impressed with your method! But sad to say that my 5years old son still knowing nothing, can't even read on his own, eventhough I've engaged him with the phonics class for sometimes!
Urgently need your advise!
should I start him on watching the Leapfrog DVD first (where can I get it beside the amazon.com?)before let him start the Ladybird series?

Thanks.

Regards,
Froggy

Tamarind said...

Dear Ratna,
Sorry for the late reply.

You can find many books and puzzles at Popular Bookshops in all major shopping malls. Which part of Singapore do you stay ?

For Leapfrog, I highly recommend the Letter Factory DVD and the Talking Words Factory DVD, these are only available from www.amazon.com. Let me know if you need help to order the DVDs.

Tamarind said...

Dear Sutong,
Don't worry, 5 years old is a very good time to start. He can learn to read very well by 6 years old.

If he already knows all his phonics letter sounds very well, then you should start to let him read the Ladybird Peter and Jane series. Start from book 1a, 1b, then 2a, 2b, 3a, 3b, etc. Read 2 or 3 pages a day will do. Let him point to every word (or you point) and ask him to read out loud. If you can persist until book 11a, he will be able to read any English books.

Sutong said...

Hi Tamarind,

Thanks for your fast reply!
I will try to follow your method, hope to see some improvement on him!
So may i know what is the postage or shipping charges if order the DVD from you?Or which part of SG that you staying may be I can collect personally..?

Thanks.

Best Regards,

Sutong

Don't panic. There is still time to catch up. Just use the correct methods, and she will learn very quickly.

Hi Tamarind,
Thanks for sharing so much on your blog :) My son is 2.5 years & "reading" already. Reading in inverted commas, because he reads through memory (after we recite the sentences to him a couple of times).

He mastered his alphabets at 16 months, & has been "reading" this way for quite some time now, so i reckon he is old enough to start on phonics & read properly! Did your son get confused with why the alphabets & their sounds are different when he just started?

I am not a believer of enrichment classes & planning to self-teach whenever we have the time, so your site really comes in handy! Going to start on starfall webbie this weekend. Thanks :)

Tamarind said...

Quote:
"Did your son get confused with why the alphabets & their sounds are different when he just started?"

Hi limay,
My son did not get confused with the names and sounds of the alphabet. Actually he became familiar with the sound of each letter, before he learned the names :)

When you teach the phonics sounds, just make sure that you always teach the sound in relation to words, like a is for apple, alligator in starfall.com. Kids should have no problem understanding it.

limay said...

Hi,
Thanks :)
We started on the Starfall site last nite, covering A-C & keeping the session to 15 minutes. He enjoyed it alot, seems to have gotten it, & wanted to continue on with D & so forth, so I guess we are doing it right! Even asking me to continue the 1st thing this morning.

Btw, some phonics sound doesn't quite make sense (at least to me, not having learnt phonics growing up!)- like A("ah") is for apple, but we don't say ah-pple, or ah-lligator...

I think you mentioned somewhere in your blog - did you say that taking about 15 minutes a nite, it took your son about 10 months to master his phonics & start reading simple books on his own? :)

Panic said...

Hi Tamarind,

My boy is in K2 now and he can read reasonably ok but I think he prefers us to read to him rather than reading on his own. I think it could be because mummy read to him when he was little and he sort of developed the habit that mummy will read to him and he enjoys it. I also think that he may be lazy to read sometimes.

How do I encourage him to read on his own and not us reading to him?

Hi limay,
Yes I taught my boy for only 15 mins a day, sometimes even less than that.
He took about 10 months to learn the 3 and 4 letter words, long vowels as well as silent "e". At the same time, I also taught him sight words using the Peter and Jane series.

Key Words with Ladybird

It is very important to teach both phonics and sight words at the same time.

When my boy finished reading the Peter and Jane book 11a, he was able to read books like this :
Reading confidently at a very young age

It took about 1 year 6 months for him to go from knowing only the alphabet, to reading long English novels of about 200 words a page fluently.

Note that every child is different and will progress at a different rate.

Tamarind said...

One suggestion is to ask him to read out loud to you everyday, from a good story book of your choice. Ask him to read a few pages out loud a day. Give him lots of encouragement, praise him when he has finished reading.

The problem that many kids faces when they read on their own, is that they may not know some words as they read, and as a result they do not understand the story and just give up. By asking him to read out loud to you, you can teach him the new words, and he will feel more motivated to read on.

As my kids read out loud to me, when it comes to the exciting parts of the book, they will just continue to read on their own even after I asked them to stop reading out loud.

I am not sure what is your son's reading level.
When my kids completed the Peter and Jane level 11 and 12, these are some of the books that they enjoyed reading on their own :

Three Tales of My Father's Dragon
Ruth Stiles Gannett

Wonderful Wizard of Oz
L. Frank Baum

The Adventures of Pinocchio
Carlo Collodi (Author)
Roberto Innocenti (Illustrator)

The Boxcar Children
Gertrude Chandler Warner (Author)

Tamarind - thanks for responding! Am looking forward to when he can read on his own in 1-2 years time :) We had our 2nd 15 minute session last nite (D-F) & he is enjoying every minute of it - forgoing time to watch his fav Mickey Mouse Clubhouse to sit with me for 15 minutes of phonics instead! My hubby thinks he is too young & "kids learn to read on their own eventually", but as long as he shows interest, i will continue on the Starfall site with him, in addition to regular reading.
Thanks again, & good weekend!

My son is 6 tis yr.. but for now.. he still have problem remembering sight words and can't read full sentences (eg a K2 maths qns).
Wat do u tink i shld do to help him? I will b buying Peter & Jane series, but do u tink I shld invest in all 36 books or juz the 'a' and 'b' series. I have another 2 younger girls, so it will b a gd investment. I have more qns, will it be better to ask here or in KSP?
TIA!

Tamarind said...

Hi Patricia,
You should first focus on practicing phonics with him.
Check out my blog for resources:
How to teach phonics

Even if he already knows the phonics sounds, it is not enough. You must practice with him until he can spell any 3 letter word confidently. A child who is good in phonics will be able to remember sight words easily. Sight words cannot be pronounced entirely using phonics sounds, but phonics can help the child remember how to read parts of the word and that will be very helpful.

For the Peter and Jane series, my advice is to buy one book at a time. It is not necessary to read all 36 books. In fact, my girl only read 6 books from the series, and my boy only read up to book 11a. Since your son is already in K2, he may only need to read the "a" books, and book 1a may be too easy for him. You can try to let him read at Popular bookshop and see if you can start from 2a or 3a.

The Tom and Kate series is similar to the Peter and Jane series, but the stories are different and Tom and Kate books are more modern. You can also try to look for the Superhero Phonics, also by Ladybird :

Superhero Phonics

You can post your questions here in this blog. I am too busy to visit KSP forum nowadays.
