Written by Chloe

Since Chloe is able to read very well, she naturally knows how to write. I do not need to spend time teaching her how to write. She loves to write cute little stories, entirely on her own initiative, without any help from me. She has been writing before her 5 years old birthday.

Here is a little story she wrote for the "Junior creative writing" at her K2 class. She wrote it without any help from her teacher or from me. Although it is not perfect, I am very happy to read it.

The following are some of the little essays she wrote at 5 years old.
This one describes one of her dreams.

She likes to write "little books" like this one.

I don't even know when she did this one about pregnant mothers. The drawings are so funny !

Signs of a young shopaholic?

Chloe wrote this book just before she turned 5 years old. I think it is really cute. Click on the photos to see the words clearly.

That is so wonderful. Tamarind, I happened to chance upon this blog from the forum and came in to understand more and how to teach my child too.

She is very impatient with anybody reading books to her and had very little attention span listening too. I hope this is normal. She however, enjoyed playing word games.

Kindly share more on your blog.

Hi Family Portal,
To get children interested in books, you can try to get them pop-up books, or books in which they can lift the flaps, push the tabs etc.

Check out this page for photos of these types of books :
Books they love

It is natural that very young children cannot sit still to listen to books being read to them. So we should let their little fingers have something to do.

Wow! Your gal can draw so well! Her little story about her dream is so enchanting. My 4.5yo loves to read, write and draw too.

This is very impressive. Is chloe in K2 this year? My dd loves reading but does not like to write. Would appreciate if you can share with us how you get her to write the stories. I tried getting mine to write her diary, she was excited but she kept asking me how to spell some words and I lost steam afterwards. Should I just let her write what she wants or correct her spelling for every single word? What do you think?

Sorry for the late reply. I missed out your comment on this page.

Chloe started to write after she is reading very well. She has a very strong foundation in phonics, and she is able to spell almost any word using phonics techniques. I only need to help her with very few words. She writes the stories entirely on her own initiative, without the need for me to tell her.

You should let your dd write whatever she wants now, there is no need to correct every word, unless she asks you. At the same time, teach her phonics and make sure she knows phonics very well. She will slowly learn to use phonics to spell all the words.

Hi Tamarind,

Your gal's drawings are very detailed, creative and neat for her age! Could you share how she was trained to put in so much details, or she just has the natural inclination to do so?

I am quite hopeless at drawing, so I cannot train her to draw.

She loves to draw since she was 3 years old. I make sure that she has lots of papers and pencils. I have hundreds of picture books for the kids at home. I guess she gets her ideas from the beautiful pictures in the books :)

So Cute! My daughter used to like writing stories and illustrating them as well! She even wrote a series based on one character so I scanned them and had them printed out and bound nicely. She kinda stopped doing it after pri 4 though. Anyway, this is all way past her already. She's already 16+.

Hi,
Your girl's stories are so cute! And I like her drawing so much :)
I know of a girl same like your girl, she's the daughter of Jann (the one organising BP on teaching mummies phonics class in Motherhood forum), her girl is now 9 years old and will be publishing her first book soon. Her girl also likes to write stories with pictures drawn on the pages :)
Teaching phonics is indeed very powerful!

Hi Tamarind,

How are u and ur kids? This is malar from south india. Hope u remember me. I followed ur method for my son. Almost 80% he took / adopted the method. He finished till 12B in peter and jane series. Now hes in Grade 2. Because of these books reading hes first in his class in any competition etc., In the last 2 - 3 months, hes unable to read story books etc., as his school studies/homework r more. I am bit afraid that he may forget the phonics rules as hes not reading the story books etc., Before he was reading 2 / 3 pages daily without fail... .but now hes not reading continously 3 pages and also not daily. What should i do to maintain that english reading habit ???? Help me with some useful tips.....

With regards,
Malar

Hi Malar,
Sorry for the late reply. I have been very busy with work.
Of course I remember you. Your son is impressive !
My kids also have a lot of homework from school. In addition to that, I am teaching them to read Chinese books. So now they have very little time to read English story books to me. What I do is to get many English books for them to read on their own. For my boy, I bought the Astrosaurs, Jack Stalwart, Magic Schoolbus chapter books. He reads these books on his own, purely for enjoyment after he has completed his homework.
My advise is to find some books that interest him, so he can read a few pages whenever he is free. Otherwise, since he is reading well, I think it is fine to practice reading only one page a day, or only a few times a week.

Thanks a lot Tamarind.

My son generally tell me that he would read on his own but i didnt allow him as i thought that he may miss some tough words which he may not know how to pronounce properly or without understanding the meaning..........

After reading ur message, I think that i can allow my son to read on his own so that he can read many pages daily and tell him to ask the tough words or meanings which he really dont understand......

We have bought many books for him accordingly to his interest like dinosaurs realted books, chotta beam books etc., (a cottoon character which would come in TV).

I am grateful to u Tamarind.

Bye for now.
