Books For a Beginning Reader

Quote from Hooray for Dr Seuss :
Children may not know his real name, but they know what they like. And what they like is Dr. Seuss. The story of Dr. Seuss, whose real name was Theodor Geisel, is an interesting one. The impact he had on books for children is an enduring one. On March 2, school children across United States and beyond celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday, with skits, birthday cakes, and reading from his books.

...

It was his publisher who first involved Geisel in creating entertaining children's books with a limited vocabulary for beginning readers. In May 1954, Life magazine published a report about illiteracy among school children. Among the factors cited by the report was the fact that children were bored by the books that were available at the beginning reader level. His publisher sent Geisel a list of 400 words and challenged him to come up with a book that would use about 250 of the words. Geisel used 236 of the words for The Cat in the Hat, and it was an instant success.

Both Chloe and Jerome enjoy reading these books very much.

Hi Tamarind

read your blog on teaching your kids phonics and i have gotten the Leapfrog DVD. Just 3 times wathching the letter factory, both my sons (2 & 4 yrs old) are able to say the sound from A to Z. But when i tried to start to teach my 4 yrs old son to spell simple words, he is reluctant to do so. i tried borrow the Dr. Seuss books from library and read to him. He seems to like the book a lot.
May i know where do you get the books from in Singapore? Do you know where i can get second hand book of these?

Hi steng,
Sorry for the late reply.

You should be able to find Dr Seuss books from the National Library.

You can also buy new ones at Kinokuniya (Ngee Ann City), Borders (Wheelock place) or any other major bookshops.

I would advise you to try the Ladybird Peter and Jane series.

Hi
I would like to recommend the Mini Masters Series. They introduce the works/ paintings of world-renowned artists with simple rhyming narration. Great little boardbooks to learn abt Masters' works (Picasso/ Van Gogh etc) & phonics.

Hi Tamarind,
My girl is going P1 next year. She just started to read Peter and Jane series 5b recently. She don't read other story books only P&J. Do u think she is ready to go P1? I'm very very worried for her.
Thanks.

Hi Christine,
You can buy the Ladybird books from any English bookshops in Singapore, like Popular, Kinokuniya at Ngee Ann City, Pageone at Vivocity, etc.

Dear Worried mum,
Don't worry ! She should be fine for P1. The story books that they read in the Stellar Program only have one sentence in each book, which should be very easy for her.

Hi Tamarind

My son is now progessing to P & J
2b. However, i realised there are more and more words like, Want which cannot use phonics to read it out. In such case, shld i teach my boy to read out the word directly?

Hi sunset_dae,
Yes you should just point to the word and read it out. Peter and Jane is good for teaching sight words :)

Even when phonics is taught in school, parents must practice with kids at home everyday to make sure that the kids are very good in phonics. Kids also need to know 250 sight words in order to read fluently.

My suggestion is to read phonics readers as well as the Ladybird Peter and Jane series with him. You cannot leave it to him to read on his own, and you should not read to him. Point to every word and ask him to read out loud to you, help him only when he does not know how to read a word. You need to do this everyday for at least 30 minutes if you want him to improve quickly. When he is very confident with reading, he will naturally read on his own.
