Hi Tamarind,

I read with great interest and admiration on the way you that you have taught your children to read...

I started teaching my ds of 4 yr old phonics last Sep using the Leapfrog DVDs and Letterland books... However, I tried the Peter and Jane readers but they doesn't seem to capture his attention, maybe because the illustrations are not attractive enough... do you any suggestions of other readers that I can use...?

Also, I would appreciate your advice in teaching the following sounds cos they seems to sound the same:
- ur eg. fur
- ir eg. fir
- er eg. fern
- ea eg. meat
- ee eg meet
- ph and 'f'

It's especially confusing when I get him to do simple decoding of words to pronounce... Would appreciate your advice... thanks...

Hi Hosanna,
You can try the Tom and Kate series which is also from Ladybird.

However, the Peter and Jane series are the best series for teaching kids to read, and I do advise parents to try to persist using this series. These books are "study" books, they may not be fun for every child. But both my kids grow to love them very much. Make it a routine to read at least one or two pages every day. I have seen amazing results in my kids.

I actually did not teach my son words with "ur", "ir", "er", "ph", phonetically. He learns all these words by sight, that is, I just point and teach him to read the whole word. This is more effective than making him remember them phonetically.

For words with "ea", "ee", you can try this excellent website :
Starfall

For phonics, I only taught using the words listed in my blog, on the right column, these together with sight reading, are more than enough to teach a child to read very well.

Hi Tamarind,

It's me again!! Trying hard to complete the phonics as recommended in ur blog with my gal.

However i am stuck with this long vowel. For example :

i) how do you sound "oa" and use phonics to prounounce the word "boat" OR
ii)how do you sound "ea" and use phonics to prounounce the word "beat".

THANK YOU!! for your constant advise..

Cheers... Melody

Hi Melody,
To teach "boat", break it into b-oa-t. "oa" is pronounced as the name of "o", not the sound. "ea" is prounouced as the name of "e".

Check out this webpage :

Hope this helps.
